Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive: Birding In Central Florida

January 11, 2016 by JD 1 Comment

Our family got to visit the Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive again this weekend! We missed our turn on the way in as the residential and commercial development surrounding the conservation area seem to have made big leaps since last Summer. This time, we saw new homes being built right along the corner of Binion and Lust Road (the nearest cross street for this point of interest) in Apopka.

Birding in Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife DriveAs a family, we love driving around Central Florida and taking a detour over to the Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive on the way to the countryside. It’s a great place to go birding and engage our children–even our toddler–in identifying all kinds of birds and wildlife, including the rare ones. We noticed that the more we visit this place (as well as Black Point Wildlife Drive), the more familiar we become of the birds’ movements, behaviors, and habitats. It’s a fun way to learn and spend the weekend together in a place that’s not too crowded… and, it’s free*! The beauty of God’s Creation never ceases to amaze us. He is definitely the Master Artist!

Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

Psalm 150:6 KJV

Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive

The Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive is an unpaved, one-way, 11-mile road flanked by a wildlife habitat that many birds and animals call home. Besides birds and alligators, we’ve also seen venomous snakes, otters, and bobcats. It is important to drive slowly and respect wildlife (do not feed them) during your visit. It is equally important to be courteous to other visitors by pulling over to the side (in designated areas) to avoid blocking the road.

Looking for more information? We posted more information about the Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive in our original post when we first visited the area. You can also find official information on the St. Johns River Water Management District website.
