The Southernmost Point

May 3, 2016 by JD Leave a Comment

Psalm 8:3-4 KJV - Christian Devotion
South Point – Big Island, Hawaii: The southernmost point of the United States

South Point – one of those awesome places where you can offroad along the edge of the earth! Our family loves to drive along many a coastline across different states, but there’s just something special about South Point. It’s the southernmost point of the 50 states! We rented a 4×4 SUV during our trip to the Big Island of Hawai’i earlier this year and we parked it along the edge (well, almost) of a bluff. The wind was blowing, the sun was blazing, and you can almost feel the depth and power of the ocean on your skin. God’s Creation is just utterly amazing! I felt soooo miniscule being along the water’s edge, as I pondered,

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;  What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

Psalm 8:3-8 KJV

We are but a speck in the universe yet God cares for us so much and has given us soooo much. I mean, He gave us “dominion over the works of [His] hands”! I don’t think we earned this role as a result of our merit. Far from it! It is only by His love and grace.

His excellence isn’t just in His power but also in His choice to love you and me. Besides giving us dominion over His works, He also gave us His only begotten Son to die for our sins. That is truly the greatest gift we could ever receive. I am so undeserving of His love. I am but a sinner saved by grace.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:8 KJV

Pause & Reflect

The same One Who created–and is in control of–such power is the same God Who sent His only Son to die for you and me. He owes us nothing, yet He made the ultimate Sacrifice out of His love for us, so we can be free. We owe Him everything; what have we given back out of our love for Him?

Application

Take a moment to seek out God’s power and love by observing His Creation. What is He trying to tell you? Spend time in His Word, spend time in prayer, and ask what you can do to show your love for Him. Perhaps He’ll point you to someone in need of His love and encouragement. Perhaps He’ll move you to serve more at church. Perhaps He’ll guide you to start leading daily devotions from the Bible with your family. Or, maybe He wants you to reconnect with someone who has wronged you. Whatever it may be–seek Him first, surrender your heart to Him fully, and He will guide your next steps–His way, His time.

Take action: If you haven’t memorized Proverbs 3:5-6, consider writing it down as you wait for His direction to use you. If you can sense that God has been knocking on the door of your heart, this page shows you how to let Him in.
