The Next Time You Look At A Rainbow…

January 29, 2016 by JD Leave a Comment

The rainbow as a token of God's covenant

Back when we used to live in Hawai’i, we would often be blessed with seeing a double rainbow! This aerial photo of a double rainbow over Hawaiian waters was quite a treat–we actually got to see the entire rainbow gracing the Pacific Ocean while aboard a small Cessna plane.  It’s not often that we get to see where the rainbow starts and where the rainbow ends. Needless to say, it was a beauty to behold! Anyway, as I was reading through Genesis 9 about God’s covenant to us, I got goosebumps (in Hawaii, we called it “chicken skin”) as I read the verse that followed this one:

And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Genesis 9:15 KJV

The next time you look at a rainbow (or a double rainbow)…

While Genesis 9:15 KJV spoke to me more about God’s mercy and grace, the next verse spoke to me in an entirely different way:

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

Genesis 9:16 KJV

God said that He “will look upon it”! He will look upon the rainbow! The very same rainbow that we gaze at–the one with all the beautiful colors–is the same rainbow that He’s looking at right at the same time! What a demonstration and testament of His love for us! In addition, the next verse says this:

And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

Genesis 9:17 KJV

The rainbow is His token of love for us! What a sweet and loving God we have!

Application

The next time you look at a rainbow, remember that our loving Father in Heaven is looking at it, too.

Take action: To learn more about God’s power, authority, and love, how about revisiting Genesis 9? If you would like to know how God can be your Father, also, this page shows you how.
