Life’s Mountains

May 11, 2016 by JD Leave a Comment

Matthew 21:22 KJV - Christian Devotion
Reflection Lake – Mount Rainier, Washington

Mountains. Majestic Mountains. Aren’t they such a beauty to behold? There’s a lot that goes behind the formation of mountains–smashing, shifting, pushing, erupting… movements from tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.

What’s happening beneath the surface of your life?

Are all the smashing, shifting, pushing, erupting turning you into something beautiful to behold?

Let’s take a look at this Scripture passage:

Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Matthew 21:18-22 KJV

The disciples were already amazed at how Jesus was able to instantly “shut down” the fig tree. Jesus then turned that fig tree into an object lesson.

By the way, it’s not about our faith or how much faith we have. Rather, it’s in Whom our faith is placed. It is He who could move mountains and shut down fig trees.

In another passage of Scripture, Jesus explained that the disciples were unable to cast out a demon because of their unbelief.

Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matthew 17:19-20 KJV

Our faith can be as small “as a grain of mustard seed”, yet we can still “move mountains” if our faith is placed in the right place–if we place our faith in God. What blessings are we hindering from happening in our life because of our unbelief? How are we hindering God from turning us into a beautiful mountain to behold?

The same God Who formed the mountains through tectonic activity (which He also designed) is the same One Who is shaping our lives with what seems to be a lot of smashing, shifting, pushing, erupting. If we resist, He would have to break us again, just like what a potter would do. We need to be usable–and if we resist His shaping and molding, we would have to keep being broken until we are ready to become beautiful and usable for His work.

Are we ready to submit our lives to God’s shaping and molding so we, too, can turn into beautiful mountains that can move other mountains for His glory?
