Consider The Cost Of Worry

Matthew 6:34a KJV - Christian Devotion

While each of us “wear” worry on our sleeve in different ways, we can probably all agree that it’s never a good feeling. In my little finite mind and in my small little world, I have observed that the more I own, the more I tend to worry, e.g. worrying about losing things, losing loved ones, losing money, etc. But as we learn from Scripture, we need not worry, when there’s already enough bad stuff going around:

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:34 KJV

This verse comes after Jesus tells us to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness”. When we do that, “all these things shall be added unto you”.

We just need to focus on seeking Him first.

When we place our focus away from Him, worry creeps in, and it lingers… it drains… and it can destroy. How many marriages have been destroyed because of worry? Worry over finances… worry over the other’s faithfulness… worry over raising the kids in the right way…

The truth of the matter is, God is in control, not us.

Those moments when I’d be at my “worried best”– when I would do as much as I can to control things so that they wouldn’t fall apart… the more things fell apart, the harder I tried (and the more money I spent) in my own strength, wasting valuable resources. It only left me feeling defeated, confused, discouraged… and even angry.

As I look back, it was during such times when I had learned to finally set aside my own will, my own pride, my own feelings… and redirected my focus back on God… it was during those humble, teachable times that He allowed me to take the front row seat to watch Him do things His way, His time.

Jesus, please take the wheel.

Even Jesus knew to submit to the will of His Father.

Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Luke 22:42b KJV

He trusted in His Father’s plan.

Likewise, we must trust our Heavenly Father’s plan in our lives. Things may get rocky. But, we can always trust that He cares and that He will take care of us.

He even rebuked those who worry in this verse:

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Matthew 6:30 KJV

Instead of being worried about temporal things, the Bible teaches us to focus on seeking Him first at all times.

There is a price to pay when we worry.

There is a price to pay when we’re away from God.

There is a price to pay when we don’t put Him first in our lives.

Amid the hardships of this life, let us consider the cost of worry… but more importantly, let us consider the cost of not putting Him first.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33 KJV

Take action: As you sense even the slightest grip of worry trying to grab a hold of your heart, don’t delay in seeking wisdom, peace, and guidance from our Heavenly Father. Wait and the Lord and be of good courage, my friend; He will strengthen your heart (Psalm 27:14)! If you’ve been burdened by many difficulties in your life for a long time and don’t know where to turn for help, this page shows you how you can find help in the Lord today.
