If you (or your child) have any interest in rocks, volcanoes, and beaches, you might enjoy spending some time on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Punalu’u Beach on the southeastern Ka’u coast is a fascinating sight! The black sand beach is made of lava (from Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park) flowing into the ocean. It’s amazing how something (like lava) could be so destructive yet, when it cools, can be a source of growth. Did you know that the Big Island is still growing because of the consistent lava flow?
Growth doesn’t come without any pain, though. Recently in 2014, the Big Island, particularly the Puna district, has seen massive damages caused by eruptive lava flow from the Kilauea volcano. It wasn’t long ago when some of our friends had to evacuate the town (for updates, see Kilauea status reports). Kaimu Beach was completely destroyed back in the 1990s; now, both the bay and the town are covered in some 50 feet of lava. Many years later, new homes and roads have been built on top of the cooled lava. There is now a New Beach, where the community comes together to bring sprouted coconuts to restore what was lost.
There is beauty in the aftermath of a tragedy…
I don’t say this lightheartedly. Tragedy is never easy. Maybe you’re in one now, or you’re just getting out, or had been through one. Maybe you’re about to enter one.
Hang on tight, my friend.
Cling to the Lord and His promises. Keep Him close, and ask for His strength to help you endure the pain.
Beauty and healing will come, in His time.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time.
Ecclessiastes 3:11 KJV
